About Hazelvale
Hazelvale is a remote rural locality in Western Australia's Great Southern region, situated within the Shire of Denmark approximately 25 kilometres west of Denmark township. With a 2021 Census population of just 83 residents spread across nearly 53 square kilometres, it is one of the most sparsely settled localities in the region. The area is characterised by small cattle farms, lifestyle rural properties, and the intact karri and tingle forest landscape bordering the Walpole-Nornalup Wilderness.
The locality's history dates back to the 1920s Group Settlement Scheme, when British migrants cleared dense karri forest to establish farms under the name 'Group 139.' Today Hazelvale borders Walpole-Nornalup National Park, with residents enjoying proximity to the internationally recognised Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, the wild Frankland River, and the Bibbulmun Track. Mount Frankland provides a scenic backdrop to many properties, while the broader Denmark Shire is renowned for its cool-climate wines, artisan food producers, and pristine nature tourism.
Hazelvale falls under postcode 6333 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warren-Blackwood (South West) electorate.
