About Hoyleton
Hoyleton (formerly Hoyle's Plains) is a small historic town in the Wakefield Regional Council area of South Australia's Mid North region, situated west of the Clare Valley wine region approximately 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. The locality covers 102.6 square kilometres and recorded a population of 120 at the 2021 census, preserving a small farming community in a district rich with colonial railway and pastoral heritage. Hoyleton was the original terminus of the Port Wakefield railway line, which was constructed in 1869, making the settlement one of the first established railway termini in South Australia's agricultural hinterland. The town retains its original railway goods shed from the 1870s, one of the district's most enduring heritage landmarks.
Hoyleton offers a peaceful rural lifestyle within reach of the world-famous Clare Valley wine region, whose celebrated Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are within a short drive to the north-east. The nearby towns of Auburn — one of South Australia's most beautifully preserved colonial settlements — and Clare itself provide charming heritage streetscapes, artisan food and wine experiences, and essential services for Mid North residents. Adelaide is approximately 100 kilometres to the south via Main North Road, providing access to metropolitan services. The broader Mid North is renowned for its rolling wheat and sheep farmland, historic townships, spring wildflowers and the spectacular Flinders Ranges within a two-hour drive to the north.
Hoyleton falls under postcode 5453 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narungga electorate.
