About Kybunga
Kybunga is a small rural locality in the Mid North of South Australia, situated on the plains to the west of the Clare Valley, approximately 140 kilometres north of Adelaide in the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council area. The locality covers around 103.4 square kilometres and had a 2021 Census population of 69 residents, up from 59 in 2016, reflecting a modest recent growth. Kybunga sits at the fringe of one of South Australia's most productive agricultural regions, with the town of Clare approximately 15 kilometres to the east.
Kybunga has a long pioneer history, with the local school opening in 1881 and the former Methodist and Uniting Church, built in 1886, now converted to a private residence. The locality was once served by the Hamley Bridge–Gladstone railway line from 1876 until its closure in 1989, a history that shaped its early settlement patterns. Today, farming — predominantly cereal cropping and sheep grazing — defines the character of the area, and residents travel to Clare for schools, shopping, wine tourism, and services. Kybunga is suited to those who value quiet rural living within the broader Clare Valley wine region and Mid North landscape.
Kybunga falls under postcode 5453 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narungga electorate.
