About Irrunytju
Irrunytju — also known as Wingellina — is a small Indigenous Australian community in the remote eastern reaches of Western Australia, located approximately 1,700 kilometres north-east of Perth near the point where Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory meet. Situated within the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku, the community had a population of 133 at the 2021 Census, spread across a compact area of around 6.7 square kilometres. The surrounding landscape is dramatic, defined by large granite hills, mulga scrubland, and mallee country at an elevation of approximately 676 metres.
Irrunytju is home to a Pitjantjatjara-speaking community that maintains strong cultural traditions, including hunting, gathering bush tucker, and other customary practices. The community is extremely remote, with the nearest substantial town of Warburton approximately 236 kilometres to the west, and Alice Springs some 712 kilometres to the north-east. Access is via unsealed outback roads, and residents rely on community services and occasional supply runs for essentials. Irrunytju represents a place of deep cultural significance and continuing connection to Country for its Ngaanyatjarra and Pitjantjatjara residents.
