About Papulankutja

Papulankutja — also known as Blackstone — is a remote Aboriginal community in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, within the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku. Situated in the foothills of the Blackstone Ranges between the Western Desert and the Great Victoria Desert, the community lies approximately 1,575 kilometres north-east of Perth and around 900 kilometres west of Alice Springs. The community exists on the traditional lands of the Ngaanyatjarra people, whose connection to this Country spans tens of thousands of years, and was formally established in the 1980s when permanent housing, a school, and a store were built to support the return of Ngaanyatjarra families to their homelands.

Papulankutja is home to the Papulankutja Artists art centre, which has gained national recognition for its vibrant visual arts practice rooted in Ngaanyatjarra culture and Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) stories — including the ancestral narrative of two magical goanna men that gives the community its name. The community is managed through Papulankutja Community Incorporated, operating under the broader Ngaanyatjarra Council. Facilities include a community store, school, and health clinic, and the Tjukayirla Roadhouse provides a key service point along the remote Great Central Road. Life here is deeply connected to culture, Country, and community, making it one of Australia's most distinctive and culturally significant remote localities.

Papulankutja falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
