About Karte
Karte is a sparsely populated rural locality in South Australia's Southern Mallee region, situated within the Southern Mallee District Council area east of Pinnaroo. Covering nearly 392 square kilometres of flat, largely conservation-zoned Mallee scrubland, it recorded a population of just 32 at the 2021 census. The locality falls within the federal division of Barker and the state electoral district of MacKillop, reflecting its position in one of South Australia's most thinly settled rural areas.
Much of Karte's land is designated for nature conservation, protecting remnant Mallee vegetation and native wildlife. The nearest town with everyday services is Pinnaroo, the administrative hub of the Southern Mallee District Council, located roughly 30 kilometres to the west. The local economy is centred on dryland farming, primarily cereal crops and sheep. Karte offers an exceptionally quiet, off-grid lifestyle for those drawn to remote South Australian farming country.
Karte falls under postcode 5304 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
