About Lameroo
Lameroo is an agricultural town and locality in the Murray and Mallee region of South Australia, located approximately 210 kilometres east of Adelaide and 40 kilometres west of the Victorian border. It falls within the Southern Mallee District Council and sits at an elevation of around 98 metres on the semi-arid Mallee plains, an area known for cereal cropping, sheep grazing, and mallee scrubland. With a town population of around 567 according to the 2021 Census, Lameroo serves as the main service centre for the surrounding farming community.
Established in 1904, Lameroo has retained a classic country town character with a main street that provides essential services to the surrounding agricultural district, including a supermarket, school, hotel, and medical facilities. The Mallee landscape surrounding the town offers opportunities for birdwatching and nature walks, with the adjacent Billiatt Conservation Park providing habitat for native wildlife including the endangered malleefowl. The town is connected to Adelaide via the Mallee Highway, and though distances are significant, the community is self-sufficient and tight-knit, drawing together farmers and families from the broader Southern Mallee district.
Lameroo falls under postcode 5302 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
