About Geranium
Geranium is a small rural hamlet located in the Southern Mallee District Council area of South Australia, positioned along the Mallee Highway approximately 230 kilometres east of Adelaide. The locality covers around 336 square kilometres of flat Mallee country and had a population of 83 at the 2021 Census. Surveyed in 1910 to service the Pinnaroo railway line, Geranium takes its name from the wild geraniums (Pelargonium australe) that once grew abundantly in the area.
Agriculture remains the lifeblood of Geranium, with wheat, barley, and sheep farming defining the local economy as they have for over a century. The hamlet has a primary school that has served local families since 1929, and a Railway Station Memorial Garden commemorates the line that originally brought settlers to the district. Residents travel to Lameroo or Pinnaroo, both within the Southern Mallee District Council, for additional services, with Adelaide accessible via the Mallee Highway.
Geranium falls under postcode 5301 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
