About Ngarkat
Ngarkat is a sparsely populated locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, situated approximately 227 kilometres south-east of Adelaide and 75 kilometres north of Bordertown. The locality encompasses one of South Australia's significant conservation areas — Ngarkat Conservation Park — a vast expanse of native mallee scrubland spanning hundreds of thousands of hectares. Established as a gazetted locality in 1999, Ngarkat is one of the most remote and thinly settled areas in the state, with land use dominated by conservation and limited grazing.
Ngarkat Conservation Park is the defining feature of this locality, drawing bushwalkers, four-wheel-drive enthusiasts, and nature lovers to its rugged mallee terrain, seasonal wildflowers, and abundant birdlife including mallee fowl. The park connects with the Big Desert Wilderness Park across the Victorian border, forming one of the largest protected mallee ecosystems in Australia. The tiny resident population supports a quiet pastoral lifestyle, with the nearest towns of Pinnaroo and Bordertown providing essential services and community amenities.
Ngarkat falls under postcode 5302 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mackillop electorate.
