About Kokotungo
Kokotungo is a remote rural locality in the Banana Shire of Central Queensland, situated approximately 160 kilometres west of Rockhampton and around 28 kilometres north-east of the small township of Baralaba. Covering a vast 781 square kilometres of grazing country, the locality had a 2021 Census population of just 89 residents, underscoring its sparse, pastoral character. The area takes its name from an Aboriginal word for a local hill, and the landscape is defined by open cattle country typical of Queensland's Central Highlands region.
Kokotungo is quintessential outback Queensland — a working landscape of large cattle stations with little in the way of retail or community facilities within the locality itself. Residents rely on Baralaba for basic services and Biloela (approximately 90 kilometres south-west) for more substantial shopping and medical facilities. The Dawson Valley railway line once passed through the area, though it has long since closed, and a private vehicle is essential for getting around this remote locality.
Kokotungo falls under postcode 4702 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Rockhampton electorate.
