About Koombooloomba
Koombooloomba is an extremely remote rural locality in the Tablelands Region of Far North Queensland, located south of Ravenshoe on the Evelyn Tableland. Covering a vast 757 square kilometres, the locality had virtually no permanent residents in the 2021 census. The area is historically associated with the Kareeya Hydro Power Station and Koombooloomba Dam, which were responsible for the locality's settlement during the station's construction phase.
The locality is largely encompassed by Koombooloomba National Park and Koombooloomba Conservation Park, which form part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area. The parks protect endangered wet sclerophyll forests, dry forest, and upland rainforest, and are home to unique Far North Queensland wildlife. The area attracts bushwalkers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers seeking one of Australia's most spectacular and untouched rainforest environments, accessible primarily by 4WD tracks.
Koombooloomba falls under postcode 4872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hill electorate.
