About Laramba
Laramba is a remote Aboriginal community located approximately 205 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, within the Anmatjere ward of the Central Desert Regional Council. Sitting at around 5 square kilometres in area, the community recorded a population of 189 in the 2021 Census and is home primarily to people of the Anmatjere (Anmatyerr) Aboriginal language group. Access is via the Napperby Station road off the Stuart Highway, with the journey from Alice Springs taking approximately 2.5 hours by four-wheel drive.
Laramba is a close-knit remote community set in the red sand and mulga scrubland of the Central Australian desert. The community has basic essential services and is supported under the Central Desert Regional Council's community services framework. There is no public transport, no rail service, and the community relies on road access, which can be challenging during rain events. Alice Springs is the nearest major centre for hospitals, higher education, retail, and government services. The surrounding landscape is a striking tableau of desert country important to Anmatjere culture and country.
Laramba falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
