About Maningrida

Maningrida is a remote Aboriginal community in the West Arnhem Regional Council area, located on the northern coast of Arnhem Land approximately 500 kilometres east of Darwin. Home to around 2,518 residents as recorded in the 2021 Census, the community is predominantly Kunibídji and other Aboriginal peoples of Arnhem Land, with Indigenous Australians making up over 91% of the population. Sitting at 30 metres elevation and covering approximately 11 square kilometres of coastal country along the Arafura Sea, Maningrida is one of the most significant and populous Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory.

Maningrida serves as a major regional service hub for surrounding outstations in Arnhem Land, with a community store, health clinic, school, and government services supporting both local and visiting populations. The community is internationally renowned for its vibrant Aboriginal art traditions — particularly bark painting, weaving, and sculpture — with the Bábbarra Women's Centre and local art community playing a central role in preserving and sharing culture. Access is primarily by air from Darwin, or by the Central Arnhem Road during the Dry Season; entry requires a Northern Land Council permit. The community maintains strong connections to Country and traditional language, with dozens of language groups represented across the region.

Maningrida falls under postcode 822 and is governed by West Arnhem Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Arafura electorate.
