About Manyung
Manyung is a small rural locality straddling the boundary of the Gympie Region and the South Burnett Region in South East Queensland, situated approximately 40 kilometres north-west of Gympie. The locality covers around 37.5 square kilometres of farming and grazing land, and takes its name from the former Manyung railway station, with the name believed to derive from the Waka language word meaning death adder or scrub fruit. With a 2021 Census population of 83 residents across 29 dwellings, Manyung is a quiet and thinly settled rural community. The locality falls within the federal electorate of Flynn and the state electorate of Nanango.
Manyung has a modest historical footprint — it once had a state school (which closed in 1963) and was served by the Nanango railway line, which passed through the locality before the line closed in 2010. Today, residents depend on Gympie and Nanango for services, shopping, schools, and healthcare, with both towns accessible within an hour by car. The surrounding landscape is characteristic of the South Burnett and Gympie regions, with mixed farming, grazing, and native bush. Manyung appeals to those seeking a quiet rural lifestyle with affordable land and easy access to the services of two nearby regional centres.
Manyung falls under postcode 4601 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Nanango electorate.
