Mathinna is a small rural locality in north-east Tasmania, administered primarily by the Break O'Day Council, situated approximately 63 kilometres from Launceston and 160 kilometres from Hobart. Set at an elevation of around 300 metres in a rugged, forested landscape, the locality spans over 611 square kilometres and recorded a population of 131 at the 2021 Census. The area has a long history of gold mining and farming dating back to the colonial era, and the name Mathinna itself carries a place in Tasmanian history as the name of an Aboriginal Tasmanian child from the nineteenth century.
