About Meringur
Meringur is a remote rural locality and small township in the north-west corner of Victoria, situated in the Millewa region of the Mallee within the Mildura Rural City local government area. The locality covers a vast area of approximately 752 square kilometres, and the 2021 Census recorded a population of around 70 people across the broader locality. Meringur lies approximately 93 kilometres west of Mildura and around 35 kilometres east of the South Australian border, making it one of Victoria's most isolated communities.
The Meringur township, established following the opening of the Werrimull–Meringur railway line in 1925, today retains a small post office and the much-loved Millewa Pioneer Village — a remarkable volunteer-built collection of original Mallee buildings and historical artefacts that celebrates the heritage of the Millewa settlers. The surrounding landscape of open mallee scrub and vast grain-farming properties gives the region a distinctive outback character, with wheat and grain farming the dominant land use. Residents rely on their own vehicles for all daily needs, with Mildura providing the nearest access to full services, hospitals, and secondary education.
Meringur falls under postcode 3496 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
