About Werrimull
Werrimull is a remote rural village located approximately 79 kilometres west-south-west of Mildura in the far north-west of Victoria, within the Mildura Rural City Council area. Situated in the Millewa Settlement Area of the Mallee region and covering an expansive 728 square kilometres, Werrimull is one of Victoria's most isolated communities, positioned roughly midway between Mildura and the South Australian border. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 97 residents, sustained largely by dryland grain farming and pastoral activities in the surrounding Mallee countryside.
Werrimull was established as a closer-settlement farming community in the 1920s, and the locality still has a functional, if modest, village centre comprising a hotel, general store, police station, public hall, Catholic and Uniting churches, and Parks Victoria office. The Werrimull Hotel is renowned as one of Victoria's most remote outback pubs. The principal industries in the surrounding district are wheat, barley, and oat farming, alongside sheep and cattle grazing. With no rail service since 1989, a car is essential for access to Mildura and its full range of services, including hospitals, schools, shopping, and an airport.
Werrimull falls under postcode 3496 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
