About Millaroo
Millaroo is a small rural town and locality in the Shire of Burdekin in North Queensland, situated approximately 121 kilometres south-southeast of Townsville and 67 kilometres southwest of Ayr. With a population of 86 residents at the 2021 census, it occupies around 57 square kilometres of productive agricultural land beside the Burdekin River. The region is known for its sugarcane farming, and Millaroo sits within one of Australia's most significant sugar-producing districts. The climate is tropical, with warm, wet summers and mild, dry winters.
Millaroo's community is small and close-knit, with life centred around the agricultural calendar of the cane-growing season. The nearby town of Ayr serves as the regional hub, providing schools, shopping, healthcare, and recreational facilities including a sports complex and arts centre. The Burdekin River itself is a local attraction, popular for fishing, swimming, and birdwatching, and the surrounding landscape of cane fields and tropical sky offers a distinctive character found nowhere else in Australia.
Millaroo falls under postcode 4807 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Burdekin electorate.
