About Monarto South
Monarto South is a rural locality within the Rural City of Murray Bridge, South Australia, located approximately 65 kilometres south-east of Adelaide along the South Eastern Freeway. Covering over 127 square kilometres of mallee scrubland and open farmland between the Mount Lofty Ranges foothills and the Murray River plains, the locality sits about 16 kilometres west of the Murray River. With a 2021 Census population of 152, Monarto South is most widely known as the home of Monarto Safari Park, one of Australia's premier wildlife attractions.
Monarto Safari Park is the defining landmark of the locality — a 1,500-hectare open-range zoo that is the largest by area in Australia, home to more than 500 animals including lions, cheetahs, giraffes, and rare African species. The locality also encompasses Monarto Conservation Park and borders Ferries McDonald Conservation Park, making it an important wildlife corridor in the region. Once earmarked in the late 1970s as the site of a new satellite city for Adelaide, that development never proceeded, preserving the area's rural and conservation character. The South Eastern Freeway provides straightforward access to Adelaide, making Monarto South an accessible rural retreat for day visitors and residents alike.
Monarto South falls under postcode 5254 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hammond electorate.
