About Tepko
Tepko is a tiny rural locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, located approximately 20 kilometres north-west of Murray Bridge, between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Murray River. With a population of just 31 people recorded in the 2021 census, it is one of South Australia's smallest gazetted localities. The name Tepko is derived from an Aboriginal word for a hill in the area, and the locality sits at an elevation of approximately 109 metres.
Tepko has a quiet agricultural character, with the surrounding land used for grain farming and grazing in the Murray Mallee scrubland. The locality was historically served by a stop on the now-closed Sedan railway line, with the last grain train passing through in 2005. Murray Bridge (20 kilometres to the south-east) is the nearest town for all services including supermarkets, schools, and medical care. The area also sits beneath the Heywood interconnector transmission line corridor, giving it a distinctive presence in the power grid landscape.
Tepko falls under postcode 5254 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hammond electorate.
