About Mount Mary
Mount Mary is a small town in the Murray and Mallee region of South Australia, situated on the Thiele Highway between Eudunda and Morgan in the Mid Murray Council area. The town is approximately 24 kilometres south-west of Morgan and 35 kilometres north-east of Eudunda, lying in the County of Eyre at an elevation of 95 metres. Despite its name, the terrain is essentially flat — the name is believed to be a corruption of "Mound Mary", referring to a low earthen rise. The 2021 Census recorded a population of just 36 residents.
Mount Mary was originally surveyed in 1883 and proclaimed as the town of Krichauff in 1884, before being renamed after the nearby Mount Mary railway station on the Morgan railway line. That line connected Morgan to the wider rail network from 1878 until its closure in 1969, after which the town has been served by road only. Today the area supports dryland cereal cropping and livestock grazing on properties typical of the mid-Murray hinterland, and the heritage-listed Mount Mary Hotel remains a landmark in this quiet rural settlement.
Mount Mary falls under postcode 5374 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Frome electorate.
