About Mount Seymour
Mount Seymour is a small rural locality in Tasmania's Southern Midlands Council area, situated approximately 15 kilometres south-east of the historic town of Oatlands on the Midland Highway corridor. Covering around 29 square kilometres of gently undulating midlands farmland, the locality recorded a population of 78 at the 2021 Census and is representative of the quiet pastoral character found throughout Tasmania's central midlands. The Southern Midlands region is known for its collection of early colonial sandstone buildings, with Oatlands holding one of Australia's finest concentrations of nineteenth-century stone architecture.
The locality is primarily agricultural, with sheep grazing and cropping the dominant land uses across the open midlands landscape. Oatlands serves as the main service centre for the area, offering a general store, primary school, historic mill precinct, and the Callington Mill — one of Australia's few remaining operational windmills — which is a popular visitor attraction. Hobart is approximately 85 kilometres to the south via the Midland Highway, and Launceston is around 100 kilometres to the north, making the region accessible to both of Tasmania's major cities.
Mount Seymour falls under postcode 7120 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
