About Oatlands
Oatlands is a historic rural town located 84 kilometres north of Hobart and 115 kilometres south of Launceston on the Midland Highway, within the Southern Midlands Council area of Tasmania. With a population of 728 at the 2021 Census, Oatlands holds the remarkable distinction of having the largest concentration of colonial sandstone buildings of any town in Australia, many constructed by convict labour in the 1830s and 1840s. Situated on the shores of Lake Dulverton, the town was established as a garrison town and military outpost in the early days of European settlement in Van Diemen's Land.
Oatlands is a popular heritage tourism destination, drawing visitors with its well-preserved Georgian architecture, Callington Mill (the only working historic watermill in the Southern Hemisphere), and the scenic Lake Dulverton Conservation Area. The town has a small but stable community of retirees, local farmers, and heritage enthusiasts who appreciate its quiet pace, unique history, and strong connection to Tasmania's convict past. Local amenities include a primary school, general store, accommodation, and cafes, while larger services are available in Hobart or Launceston. It is a quintessential Midlands town beloved for its authenticity.
Oatlands falls under postcode 7120 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
