About Muradup
Muradup is a small rural locality and historic townsite in the Shire of Kojonup, situated in Western Australia's Great Southern region approximately 260 kilometres south-east of Perth. The locality covers around 173 square kilometres of open agricultural country between the towns of Kojonup and Boyup Brook, and is bisected by the Balgarup River. With a 2021 Census population of 97 residents across 36 dwellings, Muradup reflects the broader pattern of rural population decline seen across regional WA, having once supported a far more active community before declining from over 100 residents in 2016.
Muradup has deep roots in the agricultural history of the Great Southern, with sheep and mixed farming forming the backbone of the local economy since European settlement began in the area in the 1850s. The townsite was gazetted in 1907 — originally as 'Muradupp', a name derived from the nearby Mooradupp Pool, a Noongar place name first recorded during a survey in 1846. Once home to its own school, post office and general store, the locality today is a quiet farming community where many families have worked the same land for generations. The Narlingup Nature Reserve lies to the west, and the broader Kojonup district is renowned for producing high-quality Merino sheep and wool.
Muradup falls under postcode 6394 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
