About Qualeup
Qualeup is a small rural locality in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, situated within the Shire of Kojonup approximately 290 kilometres south-east of Perth and around 35 kilometres west of the township of Kojonup. Covering a substantial 205 square kilometres of agricultural and bushland terrain, the locality had a population of just 72 at the 2021 Census. Qualeup takes its name from the nearby Lake Qualeup, an Aboriginal place name first recorded by a surveyor in 1907, and the area has a long history of farming and timber activity in the South West.
The locality lies along the Boyup Brook-Kojonup Road and once served as a railway siding when the Boyup Brook to Kojonup line opened in 1912. Today, the township of Kojonup — around 35 kilometres to the east — provides the nearest services, including shops, schools, and medical facilities, while Albany about 140 kilometres to the south is the nearest major regional centre. Qualeup is surrounded by open farmland and remnant bushland typical of the Great Southern's sheep and grain belt, with wildflowers carpeting the landscape in season. Residents enjoy a deeply rural lifestyle in a quiet corner of Western Australia, with the community centred around pastoral and agricultural pursuits.
Qualeup falls under postcode 6394 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
