About Neales Flat
Neales Flat is a sparsely settled rural locality in the Mid North region of South Australia, situated south-east of Eudunda within the Regional Council of Goyder. Covering approximately 82 square kilometres, the locality had a 2021 Census population of 78 residents, reflecting its deeply rural and agricultural character. The broader district takes its name from John Bentham Neales, a notable South Australian politician historically regarded as the 'Father of Mining' in the colony.
The locality has a long history of Lutheran settlement, with Neales Flat once home to three Lutheran congregations that have since merged and now combine services with the church at nearby Peep Hill as part of the Eudunda Robertstown Lutheran Parish. Farming remains the cornerstone of life here, with cereal cropping the dominant land use across the gently undulating plains. The town of Eudunda, approximately 111 kilometres north-east of Adelaide, serves as the main service centre for the district, offering a primary school, general store, hotel, and community facilities.
Neales Flat falls under postcode 5374 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Frome electorate.
