About Newlyn
Newlyn is a small historic town in the Shire of Hepburn in central Victoria, situated on the Midland Highway approximately 124 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 27 kilometres north-east of Ballarat. The township sits at an elevation of around 452 metres above sea level and had a population of 136 at the 2021 Census, reflecting its quiet, rural character. Newlyn was first settled in the 19th century by Creswick miners who turned to farming as alluvial gold became harder to obtain, giving the town a heritage tied to Victoria's gold rush era.
The community is served by a small state primary school and the Newlyn Recreation Reserve, which hosts the local Newlyn Football Netball Club and the Coronet City-Newlyn Cricket Club — important hubs of rural community life. The surrounding countryside is characterised by rolling farmland and open pastures typical of the central Victorian highlands. Nearby Creswick, just 10 kilometres to the west, and the popular spa and arts town of Daylesford, 19 kilometres to the north-east, provide residents with access to additional services, dining, and attractions.
Newlyn falls under postcode 3364 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
