Nugara is a rural locality on King Island, situated approximately 5 kilometres east of the island's main township of Currie within the King Island Council area. King Island lies in the Bass Strait between Tasmania and Victoria, and Nugara forms part of the island's agricultural hinterland. With a population of 109 at the 2021 Census spread across approximately 68 square kilometres, Nugara is one of the more sparsely populated localities on the island.
King Island, and Nugara by extension, is renowned for its premium dairy and beef farming, with King Island Dairy sourcing milk from local farms where cows graze on salt-enriched coastal pastures. The island is also known for kelp harvesting, fishing, and a growing tourism sector. Currie provides the main services for residents including schools, shops, a hospital and the island's main airport, which offers regular flights to Melbourne and Burnie.
