About Parattah
Parattah is a small historic township in Tasmania's Southern Midlands, situated approximately 6 kilometres south-east of Oatlands and around 90 kilometres north of Hobart within the Southern Midlands Council area. With a population of 147, the locality sits at an elevation of 431 metres on the Midlands plateau, occupying around 18 square kilometres of rural farmland. The area is predominantly a quiet rural community with a modest number of dwellings scattered across the surrounding pastoral landscape.
Parattah holds genuine historic significance, with several well-preserved 19th-century buildings lining its main street, including the Tudor-style Parattah Hotel built in 1889, a historic railway station, and a farmhouse once home to Hudson Fysh — co-founder of Qantas. A number of heritage churches also remain from the township's heyday, with some dwellings currently undergoing restoration. The area appeals to those drawn to Tasmania's colonial heritage and the peaceful open countryside of the Central Midlands, with Oatlands — the town with the greatest number of intact Georgian sandstone buildings in Australia — just a short drive away.
Parattah falls under postcode 7120 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
