About Parndana
Parndana is a small locality on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, situated approximately 40 kilometres west of Kingscote, the island's main town, within the Kangaroo Island Council area. With a population of around 155 residents and a compact area of just 2.8 square kilometres, it was established after World War II as the centre of the Soldier Settlement Scheme, which saw 174 returned soldier families take up farming blocks and nearly double the island's population by 1954. The locality retains a strong historical identity tied to this post-war agricultural heritage.
Parndana is home to the Soldier Settlement Museum, which preserves the history of the island's post-war development and remains a popular heritage attraction for visitors. In late winter and spring, the surrounding road verges bloom with native wildflowers, adding to the locality's natural charm. Despite its small size, Parndana serves as a community hub for the island's interior, and residents enjoy the peaceful rural character of Kangaroo Island with its renowned wildlife, bushland, and coastal landscapes nearby.
Parndana falls under postcode 5220 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mawson electorate.
