About Baudin Beach
Baudin Beach is a small coastal locality on the north coast of Kangaroo Island's Dudley Peninsula, approximately 115 kilometres south of Adelaide and 12 kilometres west of Penneshaw within the Kangaroo Island Council area. With a population of just 94, the locality comprises around 207 allotments with a mix of permanent residences and holiday homes. Originally known as American Beach, the locality was renamed in 2002 after French navigator Nicolas Baudin, who explored Kangaroo Island in the early 1800s.
Baudin Beach is renowned for its excellent King George whiting fishing in the sheltered waters of Eastern Cove, and the area features a boat ramp popular with anglers and boating enthusiasts. A notable copper sculpture of Mary Beckwith, reputedly the first recorded European woman to set foot on South Australian soil, stands near the boat ramp. The locality is connected to Penneshaw and Kingscote by the Peninsula Coaches shuttle service, while the SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw provides access to the mainland.
Baudin Beach falls under postcode 5222 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mawson electorate.
