About Rhyndaston
Rhyndaston is a small rural locality in Tasmania's Southern Midlands, situated approximately 46 kilometres north of Hobart and 25 kilometres south of Oatlands along the historic Midland Highway corridor. The locality falls within the Southern Midlands Council area, one of Tasmania's most sparsely populated rural municipalities. With a 2021 Census population of just 73 residents, Rhyndaston is one of the smaller communities in the region, spread across approximately 29.5 square kilometres of open farming country.
The locality has a rich colonial history, originally known as Flat Top Hill before being renamed Rhyndaston in 1881 — a Welsh-derived term meaning "mouth of the hole" — when a post office was established as the railway extended through the Southern Midlands. Today the area supports agricultural and rural pursuits, with the nearby town of Oatlands providing access to essential services including shops, schools, and health facilities. The surrounding landscape is characteristic of the Midlands, with open grasslands, stone fences, and heritage rural properties that reflect Tasmania's early pastoral settlement.
Rhyndaston falls under postcode 7120 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
