About Sandleton
Sandleton is a small rural locality in the Mid Murray Council area of South Australia, situated on the plains on the eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges approximately 15 kilometres north of Sedan. With a population of just 20 residents recorded in the 2021 census, it is one of South Australia's quietest localities, covering an area of around 69 square kilometres of pastoral and agricultural land. The locality lies within the federal Division of Barker and the state electoral district of Stuart.
Sandleton has deep Lutheran heritage, with the St Paul's church and school established in 1881 and the Pilgrim congregation forming its own church and cemetery by 1895, both legacies of the area's German-Lutheran settlers. The surrounding landscape is characterised by wheat and sheep farming, open mallee scrubland, and proximity to the Barossa Valley wine region. Life here is peaceful and deeply rural, attracting those who seek a quiet pastoral existence well away from urban centres.
Sandleton falls under postcode 5356 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
