About Sandover
Sandover is a vast remote locality in the Northern Territory, covering approximately 18,880 square kilometres of semi-arid and arid landscape in the southern NT, some 1,133 kilometres south of Darwin. Established as an official locality in April 2007, it straddles the boundaries of the Barkly Region and Central Desert Region local government areas, and is home to a small population of around 634 people (2016 Census) living across remote communities in one of Australia's most sparsely settled areas.
The Sandover locality takes its name from the Sandover River, a seasonal waterway that flows through the area and holds deep cultural significance for the Alyawarr and Anmatyerr Aboriginal peoples, the traditional custodians of this country. Life in Sandover is characterised by strong Indigenous community ties, a harsh but striking desert landscape, and extreme remoteness. The region experiences hot, dry conditions with limited annual rainfall, and residents rely on community services for essentials, with Alice Springs being the closest major service centre.
Sandover falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
