About Seventeen Seventy
Seventeen Seventy is a historic coastal township in Queensland's Gladstone Region, situated at the southern tip of the Discovery Coast approximately 100 kilometres north of Bundaberg. Named in honour of Captain James Cook's landing here in 1770 — the second landing on Australian soil — the area covers around 6.8 square kilometres of headlands, inlets, and pristine waterways. The population was around 125 in 2021, predominantly retirees and sea changers, and the area has seen strong growth as a lifestyle destination. It neighbours the larger township of Agnes Water and together they form one of Queensland's favourite holiday and permanent escape destinations.
Seventeen Seventy offers a relaxed coastal lifestyle with access to the southern Great Barrier Reef, calm bay beaches, and world-class fishing. Residents enjoy kayaking, sailing, and snorkelling in crystal-clear waters, with the nearby Eurimbula and Deepwater National Parks providing wilderness bushwalking. Agnes Water's shops, restaurants, and surf beach are a short drive away, making 1770 ideal for retirees, nature lovers, and those chasing a slow-paced beachside life.
Seventeen Seventy falls under postcode 4677 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Burnett electorate.
