About Silver Valley
Silver Valley is a rural locality in the Tablelands Region of Far North Queensland, located approximately 147 kilometres southwest of Cairns and 82 kilometres southwest of Atherton. The locality covers around 332 square kilometres of tropical tableland, sitting at elevation near the edge of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The 2021 census recorded 145 residents, with the area known historically for silver and tin mining activity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The remains of the Coolgarra Battery and other mining relics are reminders of Silver Valley's once-busy prospecting era, making it a destination for heritage-minded visitors exploring the Atherton Tablelands. The surrounding landscape offers lush rainforest and cattle grazing country, with nearby Ravenshoe (about 32 kilometres east) serving as the main service centre. Residents enjoy a quiet rural lifestyle immersed in one of Queensland's most scenic and biodiverse highland regions.
