About South Kumminin
South Kumminin is a small rural locality in the Shire of Narembeen, situated in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia approximately 280 kilometres east of Perth. The townsite was gazetted in 1921 following the opening of a railway siding on the Merredin to Yilliminning line in 1917, and it has served as a Cooperative Bulk Handling (CBH) grain receival site ever since. With a 2021 Census population of 85 residents spread across 921 square kilometres, it is one of the most sparsely settled localities in the Wheatbelt.
The surrounding farmland is devoted primarily to wheat and other cereal cropping, with sheep and cattle grazing also part of the agricultural economy. The nearest service town is Narembeen, approximately 20 kilometres to the north, which provides essential amenities including shops, a school, medical services, and community facilities. Life in South Kumminin reflects the close-knit character of the Western Australian agricultural interior, where farming families are the backbone of the community and seasonal rhythms shape daily life.
