About Stonor
Stonor is a quiet rural locality in the Southern Midlands region of Tasmania, situated approximately 16 km south of the heritage township of Oatlands and about 80 km north of Hobart. Gazetted as a locality in 1974, Stonor covers 45 km² of classic midlands farming country on the Tasmanian central plateau. The 2021 census recorded a population of just 47 residents, making it one of the smallest localities in the Southern Midlands Council area. The eastern shore of Lake Tiberius forms part of Stonor's western boundary.
Stonor is quintessential Tasmanian agricultural countryside — open paddocks, dry-stone walls, and cool highland air. The locality is almost entirely agricultural, with sheep and cattle grazing across the surrounding landscape. The historic township of Oatlands, with its convict-era Georgian architecture and local shops, serves as the nearest service centre for Stonor residents. The old South Line railway passes through the locality, though there is no longer passenger rail service in Tasmania. Life here is deeply rural, attracting those who value space, quiet, and the understated beauty of the Tasmanian midlands.
Stonor falls under postcode 7119 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
