About Strangways
Strangways is a small rural locality in central Victoria, situated approximately 140 kilometres north-west of Melbourne within the Mount Alexander Shire. Nestled between the townships of Guildford to the east, Newstead to the north-west and Clydesdale to the south, the locality covers around 20 square kilometres of rolling farmland. With a population of just 101 at the 2021 Census and a median age of 55, Strangways is home to a quiet, established community of farming families and rural-lifestyle residents.
Strangways has a rich gold mining heritage dating back to the 1860s, with dredges operating along Jim Crow Creek as late as the 1940s. Today the area is a peaceful mixed-farming community, with traces of its former town centre including historical mining sites that attract heritage enthusiasts. The nearby townships of Newstead and Guildford provide basic services, while the larger centres of Castlemaine and Daylesford are within a short drive, offering cafes, galleries, and weekend markets that draw visitors to the broader goldfields region.
Strangways falls under postcode 3461 and is governed by Mount Alexander Shire Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Macedon (Northern Victoria) electorate.
