About Tanami
Tanami is an extraordinarily remote locality in the Northern Territory's Central Desert Region, encompassing approximately 70,400 square kilometres of the Tanami Desert along the Western Australian border. Located around 844 kilometres south of Darwin and roughly 550 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, the locality is one of the most sparsely populated in Australia, with a 2021 Census population of 144 — predominantly male, reflecting the transient workforce associated with the Tanami gold mining operations. The land is Aboriginal freehold, held by several Aboriginal Land Trusts including those of the Warlpiri people, and managed under the Central Desert Regional Council.
The Tanami locality is dominated by vast, flat spinifex and sandridge desert, and is home to Newmont's Tanami Gold Mine near The Granites — one of Australia's significant underground gold operations. The Northern Tanami Indigenous Protected Area, covering four million hectares, reflects the deep cultural connection the Warlpiri and other Aboriginal peoples have to this country. The Tanami Track, a remote unsealed road linking Alice Springs to Halls Creek in Western Australia, passes through the region and is used by adventurous travellers and mining traffic alike.
Tanami falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
