About Thamarrurr
Thamarrurr is a remote locality in the Northern Territory of Australia, centred on the community of Wadeye (formerly Port Keats), approximately 394 kilometres south-west of Darwin in the West Daly Region. The locality covers around 3,353 square kilometres of tropical savanna country on the traditional lands of the Murrinh-Patha and related language groups. The land is Aboriginal freehold under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NT) 1976, forming part of the Daly River Port Keats Aboriginal Lands Trust. With a community population of around 1,924 at the 2021 Census, Wadeye is one of the largest Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory.
Wadeye is a well-serviced community for its remote location, with a medical centre, police station, Catholic college (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Thamarrurr), supermarket, and an airstrip with regular light aircraft connections to Darwin. The Thamarrurr Development Corporation supports local economic development, housing, and community programs. Road access via the unsealed Port Keats Road may be cut off during the wet season. The locality experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, and the surrounding landscape features coastal plains, mangroves, and the river systems of the Daly region.
Thamarrurr falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
