About Tinaroo
Tinaroo is a rural locality in the Tablelands Region of Far North Queensland, set amid the lush highlands of the Atherton Tablelands approximately 90 kilometres west of Cairns. The locality covers around 19.6 square kilometres and recorded a population of 293 at the 2021 Census. Tinaroo Falls township sits on the eastern edge of the locality beside Lake Tinaroo, a large man-made reservoir created by Tinaroo Falls Dam on the Barron River. The area falls within the Tablelands Regional Council local government area.
Lake Tinaroo is the centrepiece of the locality, covering approximately 37.5 square kilometres and drawing visitors for fishing (barramundi and bass), water skiing, boating, and picnicking. The Danbulla State Forest surrounds much of the lake and offers camping areas and scenic drives. Tinaroo appeals to holiday-makers and permanent residents alike who are drawn to the cool tablelands climate, waterfront lifestyle, and outdoor recreation opportunities, making it one of the Atherton Tablelands' most popular leisure destinations.
