About Tuena
Tuena is a small historic gold rush locality situated in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, approximately 269 kilometres west of Sydney and 60 kilometres north of Crookwell, within the Upper Lachlan Shire. With a population of just 81 residents, the locality retains a quiet, rural character set in a picturesque valley along Tuena Creek, a tributary of the Abercrombie River. Housing is sparse and predominantly rural, with the locality covering around 232 square kilometres of rolling hills, farmland, and bushland.
Tuena is best known for its well-preserved gold rush heritage, with several historic buildings dating from the 1850s and 1860s lining the main street, including the Goldfields Inn (1866), reportedly the oldest licensed wattle-and-daub hotel in Australia. Parsons General Store (1860), St Marks Anglican Church (1886), and a heritage suspension footbridge are among the features of the self-guided Tuena Heritage Walk. The area attracts visitors keen on gold fossicking in the surrounding creeks, while the wider Upper Lachlan Shire offers pastoral landscapes ideal for scenic drives and nature walks.
Tuena falls under postcode 2583 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Goulburn electorate.
