About Walkamin
Walkamin is a small rural town and locality on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, situated approximately 15 kilometres south of Mareeba and 76 kilometres west of Cairns, within the Tablelands Region council area. With a population of 532 recorded in the 2021 Census, the community is spread across nearly 47 square kilometres of fertile tableland country at an elevation of around 594 metres above sea level. The area enjoys a warm tropical savannah climate moderated by its altitude, with a distinct wet season and a warm, sunny dry season that supports a productive agricultural landscape.
Walkamin's character is shaped by its rural farming heritage, with sugar cane, maize, and tropical horticulture forming the backbone of local activity. The Kennedy Highway passes through the town, providing the main link north to Mareeba and south towards Tolga and Atherton. Residents rely on Mareeba for shopping, schools, and services, while the natural splendour of the Atherton Tableland — including nearby crater lakes, waterfalls, and rainforest — makes the region appealing to those who value a quiet country lifestyle close to some of Queensland's most spectacular scenery.
Walkamin falls under postcode 4872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hill electorate.
