About Waterhouse
Waterhouse is a large, sparsely populated coastal locality on Tasmania's north-east coast, covering an expansive 306 square kilometres between Tomahawk and Bridport. With a population of just 100 at the 2021 Census, it is one of the most remote and least densely settled areas on the Tasmanian mainland. The postcode area median taxable income of $42,814 reflects the rural and seasonal nature of the local economy.
The locality is dominated by the Waterhouse Conservation Area, a 6,700-hectare reserve encompassing one of the largest remaining areas of coastal heathland on Tasmania's north-east coast, along with wetlands, grasslands, and a 25-kilometre stretch of pristine beach. More than 135 bird species have been recorded in the area, and Blackmans Lagoon is the most significant site in Tasmania for the endangered green and golden frog. Free camping is available at 11 campgrounds scattered through the reserve, making Waterhouse a popular destination for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and anglers seeking a remote coastal experience.
Waterhouse falls under postcode 7262 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bass (McIntyre) electorate.
