About Wieambilla
Wieambilla is a rural locality in the Western Downs Region of Queensland, approximately 300 kilometres west of Brisbane. With a population of 78 at the 2021 Census and covering 264 square kilometres, it is a sparsely settled area of grazing properties and bushland between the towns of Tara and Chinchilla. The locality takes its name from a pastoral run established by Charles George Temple Chauvel in the 1850s, likely named after the local Wieambilla Creek.
The surrounding area is extensively used for grazing and, more recently, coal seam gas extraction, which has become a significant industry in the Western Downs. Residents travel to Tara or Chinchilla for shopping, schools, and services. A provisional school operated at Wieambilla Sawmills from 1915 to around 1926, reflecting the locality’s early timber industry. The postcode area has a median taxable income of $45,211, and the lifestyle here centres on rural self-sufficiency and connection to the land.
Wieambilla falls under postcode 4413 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
