About Wilga
Wilga is a small rural locality in the Shire of Boyup Brook in Western Australia’s South West region, situated on the Donnybrook–Boyup Brook Road approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Donnybrook and 80 kilometres south-east of Bunbury. The locality originated as a timber railway siding when the Donnybrook to Boyup Brook line opened in 1908, built to serve the Adelaide Timber Company, and was gazetted as a town in 1915. With a 2021 Census population of 71 residents, Wilga is a tightly knit rural community spread across nearly 63 square kilometres of cleared farmland and remnant bushland.
The surrounding landscape is typical of the south-west agricultural district, with mixed farming, sheep grazing and remnant jarrah-marri woodland characterising the countryside. Wilga Farm Stay offers a popular rural accommodation experience for visitors exploring the region between Donnybrook and the Blackwood Valley. The Transwa SW4 coach service passes through the area en route between Bunbury and Boyup Brook, though most residents rely on private vehicles for daily needs. The nearest town of Boyup Brook, approximately 30 kilometres away, provides essential services including schools, a hospital, and a supermarket, while the annual Boyup Brook Country Music Festival draws visitors from across the state.
Wilga falls under postcode 6243 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warren-Blackwood (South West) electorate.
