About Willowra
Willowra (also known as Wirliyatjarrayi) is a remote Aboriginal community situated approximately 330 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, administered by the Central Desert Regional Council. The community straddles the Lander River and sits adjacent to the Tanami Desert, occupying a landscape of red earth, mulga scrub, and open spinifex plains. Originally established as a cattle station in the 1920s, the land became Aboriginal Freehold in 1979 following a land claim. The 2021 Census recorded a population of around 222 residents.
Life in Willowra centres on community, culture, and Country. The area is home to Warlpiri-speaking people who maintain strong connections to traditional language, ceremony, and the surrounding desert landscape. Basic community services including a health clinic, school, and community store support residents, though the nearest major services are a long drive away. The vast, striking environment of central Australian desert and riverine country makes Willowra a place of deep cultural significance and extraordinary natural character.
Willowra falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
