About Yuelamu
Yuelamu, also known as Mount Allan or Alpirakina, is a small remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 298 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs on Anmatyerre and Warlpiri traditional land. The community is located at an elevation of 687 metres and falls under the governance of the Central Desert Regional Council, with land managed by the Yalpirakinu Aboriginal Land Trust. At the 2021 census, Yuelamu had a population of 149 residents, the majority of whom are of Anmatyerre and Warlpiri heritage and continue to speak their languages at home. The area was formerly part of Mount Allan cattle station before being returned to its traditional custodians.
Life in Yuelamu revolves around community, culture, and connection to Country. The community has a strong focus on maintaining Anmatyerre and Warlpiri language and traditions, with community programs supporting cultural continuity. Essential services include a community store, a health clinic, and a school serving local children. The remote setting means the community is largely self-sufficient, and access is via the sealed Tanami Road to Tilmouth Well then via dirt road. The surrounding landscape of red earth, mulga scrub, and ancient rocky ranges holds deep cultural significance for the community.
Yuelamu falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
