About Yuendumu
Yuendumu is a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory, located approximately 293 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs in the Central Desert region, within the Central Desert Regional Council area. Home to the Warlpiri people, the community has a population of 740 and was established as an Aboriginal reserve in 1946, becoming a formal locality in 2007. The landscape is characterised by red desert plains and spinifex country, situated at around 667 metres elevation in a hot, arid environment.
The community is well-known for its vibrant Warlpiri art tradition, with Yuendumu artists producing celebrated dot paintings and ceremonial works that are internationally recognised. A small airstrip provides air access, and the Tanami Road connects the community to Alice Springs, though road conditions can be challenging, particularly in wet season. Essential services including a school, health centre, and community store operate within Yuendumu, and with over 63 per cent of dwellings being social housing, the community faces ongoing challenges around infrastructure and economic participation common to remote Aboriginal communities across Australia.
Yuendumu falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
